BBQ with Attitude at Altitude on Main Street

Real BBQ in a Mountain Town? You Bet!

People take BBQ personally. Dry or wet, on the bone or off, Texas or Kansas style. After a visit to Altitude, I am leaning towards Park City style as my new favorite! A BBQ renaissance is happening right on Main Street and smack in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. Serving up saucy and smokey BBQ favorites, Chef Chris Griffin is putting his own spin on classic BBQ dishes.

Owner Jen Barber started off with Bandits, a casual Texas-style BBQ joint that stayed the course on Main Street for many years, but she wanted more. She wanted to deliver an elevated BBQ dining experience to her guests beyond what Bandits could allow, so the concept for Altitude was born. After spending time in Austin this past summer, she and Chef Chris crafted a menu with a nod to the favorites blended with a fresh and fun approach. From house made sauces to smoked and picked veggies, you’ll find BBQ standards served alongside carefully crafted appetizers, sides and desserts.

Inspired BBQ Favorites

Every good meal begins with a few good starters, and there are quite a few to choose from here. We had a large group so decided to try a little bit of everything! The table favorites were the gulf shrimp cocktail served up with a smokey cocktail sauce and the sausage and queso board; it was like eating sausage fondue! Of note were the house picked veggies paired with homemade hummus. Perfect for the non-carnivores in the group.

With loads of BBQ to choose from, we decided the best approach was to try it all and started with the BBQ Board; a collection of house smoked meats. There are a variety to choose from – we opted for the Beef Rib, Brisket, Pulled Pork and house made smoked sausage. Each was tender, flavorful and left us wanting more. The sauces, served on the side, were not over-powering, but offered an extra flavor layer to the already delicious meat. Vegetarians will be thrilled with the squash mac & cheese. Local white cheddar, Gruyere and Parmesan and blended with butternut squash and mixed with orecchiette pasta. Not too rich, but certainly boasting all the gooey goodness you expect from this dish; it delighted the table. Full to the brim, we still couldn’t resist the Altitude Steak; a cooked to perfection Wagyu sirloin marinated in coffee and served with fingerling potatoes, heirloom carrots & kale with a, once again, house made steak sauce.

What’s a BBQ dinner without a classic cobbler you ask? Lucky for us, a peach cobbler served hot in a cast iron skillet is the Chef’s specialty and was worth making room for. Not too sweet and filled with fruit, it was the perfect ending to an over-the-top meal. On top of the fantastic food, cocktail aficionados will delight in the choices that include a Jen & Juice made with vodka and fresh muddled raspberry and a super special margarita with High West Silver Whiskey that delivers a tequila like profile.

No longer just a BBQ joint, altitude delivers on fall-off-the-bone goodness one would find at the best BBQ restaurants from Texas to Kansas and everything in between. Mountain comfort food served up in a chic, contemporary space, Jen is fulfilling her dream to offer a truly elevated BBQ experience.
