How to Make an Irish Car Bomb

Jump to recipe

Today is probably one of the few days a year that people think to or want to order an Irish Car Bomb. But on St. Patrick’s Day, it sounds like a grand idea!

The Irish Car Bomb is an interactive beer-based cocktail. The Irish part of the name comes from the Irish liquors used, including Irish cream and Irish whiskey. The latter part of the name’s reference isn’t as pleasant, but the drink is still popular worldwide. It’s a beer and shot cocktail, or rather a stout and shot, in which you drop a shot glass of Bailey’s and Irish whiskey into Guinness to “detonate” the drink.  At this point, you must drink it very quickly or else it will begin to curdle. While none of this sounds very appealing, it is both a social and theatrical drink that makes it fun. But to each his own.

While you can go chug down an Irish car bomb at your favorite Irish pubs today like Flanagan’s On Main or Molly Blooms, you can also show some St. Paddy’s Day spirit at home and easily make your own. So cheers to beer, whiskey and hopefully not regretting drinking Irish car bombs tomorrow!

Have a safe and fun St. Paddy’s day and if you’re looking for places to celebrate here are some happenings around town.
