Satisfying Your Senses With a Musical Feast

The quintessential warm weather mountain town experience in Park City has become the outdoor concert. A reason to celebrate summer, family and friends by sharing a picnic, a favorite bottle of wine, and relishing breezy alpine evenings during our short-lived summer season. But who has time to whip up gourmet picnic offerings on a busy weekday?

I always aspire to do so and then end up grabbing whatever I can on the way to the concert, which usually consists of some sort of half-eaten box of crackers, leftover cheese and a wayward piece of fruit. Not this time! With a small dose of preparation, a picnic filled with foodie delights is easy to order and grab on the way to your favorite outside event. This week, for us, it was the always entertaining Deer Valley Wednesday night concert, which is free!

Weather always throws us a curveball or two every season, and we drove through hail, wind and rain to get to Deer Valley Resort. But, as any mountain town resident knows, weather is temporary and as we arrived at the concert, the skies cleared and the perfect alpine evening filled with cool breezes and fabulous music ensued. Numerous area restaurants offer grab-and-go picnic selections; for our evening, we chose two of our favorites; appetizers from Riverhorse Provisions on Main Street and a picnic basket prepared by the culinary wizards at Deer Valley. Neither disappointed. To pair with the epicurean delights, we decided to keep it local and swing by Old Town Cellars, also on Main Street, to pick up a couple of delightful blends to pair with our gastronomic feast. What makes these bottles ideal selections is the fact that the bottles are screw tops – easy to manage at a picnic, and perfect for having a glass of one varietal with course one and switching to the other for course two, screwing the top back on and taking them home to be enjoyed another day.

We first dug in to the Meat and Cheese platter from Riverhorse Provisions. Ample enough for four people and filled with local and imported cheese, crunchy grapes, cured meats, crackers, olives and a tasty house mustard. The restaurant offers a wide array of picnic basket offerings that include everything from fried chicken and peach cobbler to a fresh sea-to-table seafood platter.  We paired course one with the Mountain Town White wine from Old Town Cellars. Crisp and light, it was a flawless pairing with our appetizer. For Riverhorse Provisions Summer Picnic Basket options, click HERE.

You know you’re in for a treat when you pre-order a picnic basket from Deer Valley Resort. Deer Valley offers a large array of picnic options from baskets to bags, and even kid’s baskets. Depending on your budget and appetite, there is certainly something to please everyone’s pallet and wallet. The options include vegetarian as well as salmon, however, we landed on the choice that included a chilled beef short rib as the entrée. Special dietary needs? No problem. The folks at Deer Valley have you covered. Our basket also included a cheese sampling, green salad with beets and goat cheese, house-made garlic focaccia pull-aparts, and a lemon pound cake for a sumptuous dessert. There were also some additional confectionary treats included that we sacked away for a later time. Of course, we cracked open the Mountain Town Red blend selection we had chosen from Old Town Cellars, which was a perfect accoutrement to the short rib and goat cheese. Not too heavy, a little acid and a nice finish. For Deer Valley Summer Picnic Basket options, click HERE.

One last addition to the evening, my all-time absolute favorite dessert, a Deer Valley chocolate chip cookie. Here’s what made the giant, gooey cookie even better; we used the new Deer Valley concession app Chow Now so we could order and pay for the cookie right at our seat. The delectable dessert was waiting for us at the concession stand, so no waiting in line for the cookie! How cool is that? Of course, all their food is available via Chow Now.

It’s safe to say we were the envy of the crowd around us. The little time it took to pre-order our selections from Deer Valley on their website, and dial up the Riverhorse Provisions folks, was completely worth having a hassle-free evening filled with delicious food, wine, fabulous music and unsurpassed surroundings. The bar has clearly been set for next week’s outdoor concerts – no more digging through the fridge to find something to throw in a backpack. The secret to a delicious and easy evening event is spilled and we are converts all the way!

Be sure to order your selections ahead of time from both locations, as they do require a 24-hour notice.
