The Sun Lodge, A Hidden Gem

The Canyons Resort being the largest ski resort in Utah, attracts skiers of all levels for its massive geography and extremely diverse layout. Beginner to expert, The Canyons has it all. Aside from the resort’s impeccable ski layout covering nine mountain peaks, 182 trails, five bowls, six natural half pipes, and three terrain parks, their food scene is also pretty impeccable. Each culinary stop offers something different from the other whether it be a smoked brisket sandwich eaten at their outdoor ski beach to a local cheese fondue platter served on a beautiful mountain top deck.

The Sun Lodge, the furthest northern lodge nestled below Sun Peak is somewhat tucked away comparative to the mountain’s other lodges. Because of this, one will find that the crowds are much less apparent which is perfect for those that would like excellent mountain fare without as much traffic. The Sun Lodge is the only dining spot at the resort that offers 15% to season pass holders, has a lower priced menu than anywhere else on the mountain, and is also the only place on the mountain to get a Reuben sandwich (a delicious Reuben sandwich I might add!)

The lodge being 18-20 years old provides somewhat of a shabby-chic mountain experience, and serves up comforting ski fare.

A Menu Sampling

The Epic burger – a Vail resort signature on-mountain cafeteria burger. This bad boy is 2, quarter pound Angus beef patties, a yogurt based sauce, white cheddar cheese, pickle, and a tomato slice served on an artisan bun with sweet potato fries. This burger is every reason why you should ski on the north side of the mountain.

The Sonoran Dog – A bacon wrapped dog in a Mexican style roll, tomato, pickles, caramelized onion. Hot. Dog. It’s good.

The Southwest Salad – a lighter option from the menu, the southwest salad is served in a crispy tortilla bowl with cabbage, jicama, black beans, avocado, and pumpkin seeds with your choice of protein.

Aside from these highlights, diners can also choose from pizzas by the slice, soups, and a great kid’s menu (if you head there on a Saturday, this is the main spot for the race teams to stop for lunch)

Add on an awesome outdoor patio and you’ve got a pretty ultimate ski lodge experience, and a yummy one at that.
