Red Banjo Offers a Slice of Park City Dining History
It’s inevitable. If you live in Park City, or have visited Park City, you have undoubtedly enjoyed a slice or a sub at the renowned Red Banjo Pizza Parlour. A staple on the Main Street dining scene since 1962, this family owned culinary legend has been serving up homemade family recipes through the generations and is Park City’s oldest standing restaurant. In full disclosure, writing this comes at a perfect time for me, as the Red Banjo was the site of one of our most memorable pre-wedding parties nine years ago this month. In lieu of a formal rehearsal dinner, we packed the Red Banjo with every guest and then some; we ate, drank and danced, and we etched the Banjo (as local’s call it) in to the memories of our guests as well as even further in to ours. Family Legacy of Feeding Hungry Diners
Since 1962, the Toly family has been whipping up Park City favorites at the Red Banjo. The business has been run by the Toly’s since it’s inception and there are currently three generations involved in the restaurant’s continued success. The menu showcases dishes that have been a staple since the beginning, and new additions that keep hungry diners coming back. What adds to the restaurant’s popularity is its family friendly atmosphere (a jukebox and downstairs arcade games are favorites of the kiddos), along with the wallet-friendly prices. You CAN eat on Main Street and not break the bank. Historic Park City is the guest of honor here; a picture of the Silver Queen hangs over the original wood bar, an homage to Park City Olympians who have noshed at the Red Banjo hang proudly on the back wall, and the original Red Banjo hangs surrounded by other banjos as the main artistic centerpiece. From the Toly family to the stories told on the walls, it doesn’t get more authentic Park City than this.
Homemade Dining Delights
The menu is varied and delicious. Choose from designer pizzas or make your own. Add on an order of wings or cheese bread to start and get in your greens with one of their super fresh salads. Truth be told, the salads are one of my favorite things served up here! The individual salad is a favorite – loaded with crisp veggies, Canadian bacon, pepperoni and mozzarella cheese, it’s the perfect start to your meal. They do offer a spinach salad garnished with juicy strawberries and mozzarella, a Caesar salad and other crunchy green delights as well. Not in the mood for pizza? No worries! Order up one of their ample sandwiches like the meatball sub or slow cooked pulled pork sandwich. There’s even pasta selection for diners looking to dig in to a bowl. The original menu was simple in 1962; garlic bread, pizza and a dinner salad. Since then, they’ve added a little something for everyone including a kids menu, vegetarian options and even gluten free crust. What hasn’t changed is the genuine family-infused menu and experience that can’t be replicated anywhere in Park City – a true historic gem amidst our ever-evolving ski town.
The Perfect Park City Meal
We let the proprietor, Scott Toly, choose our lunch for us. To our delight, we started off right with my favorite, gooey, delicious cheese bread. A toasty buttered baguette is loaded up with mozzarella cheese and then baked. Four slices come in one order and are the perfect shared starter. Up next, the silver king pizza – a miner’s paradise on a slice! Chock full of pepperoni, sausage, green peppers and banana peppers, it’s a sumptuous blend with a little kick! All pizzas are served with a lemon wedge riding atop – give it a squeeze over your pizza for an extra and unique flavor profile. Other designer pizzas include the Red Banjo special, the mayflower and the Ontario – names that give a nod to Park City’s skiing and mining past. Add a glass of wine or local brew and your meal is complete.
After one visit to the Red Banjo Pizza Parlour, you’ll surely add it to your list of go-to restaurants whether you’re a local or a visitor. Serving lunch and dinner daily, grabbing a slice or a whole pie is a snap!
