Enjoy Summer Days With Spin Cafe’s Homemade Gelato

The warm summer months ahead are the perfect time to enjoy a cup or cone filled with fresh, homemade gelato or Italian-style sorbetto from Spin Cafe, in Heber. The Cafe’s owner and chef, Vincent Esposito, has been making gelato from scratch since he was old enough to drive. Spin Cafe offers a wide selection of flavors all made with real fresh ingredients, no syrups, no mixes, or anything artificial.

It’s fun! I’ve been making gelato a long time. You have to treat it like an art. You have to focus on the ingredients from raw to finish and don’t cut corners.

Spin Cafe serves twelve flavors of homemade gelato and sorbet daily.

The gelato at Spin Cafe is made from scratch, in small batches, at least four to six times a week during the summer months. Esposito uses local seasonal ingredients to make each flavor, from fresh cherries, to homegrown Heber rhubarb for the Strawberry Rhubarb which kicks off the summer season. And the White Peach sorbet is made with local white peaches from Smith Orchards located at the base of Provo Canyon.

Local products are short lived here. The black berries come from Bear Lake. The pluots, a cross between an apricot and a plum, are from Smith Orchard. And the peaches come off the tree and go right into the sorbet. They never even go in the fridge.

Esposito studied abroad In Italy for a semester during college, he attended gelato school, and even relocated to the country to live, all to gain first-hand knowledge from the locals on how to make the best gelato. What he learned: always use raw ingredients and make everything from scratch. Esposito uses the best ingredients, Belgian chocolate, Madagascar vanilla beans, Saigon cinnamon, and fresh ripe produce. Everything else is made from scratch at the restaurant including the salted caramel, the Dulce de leche, and nuts, like hazelnuts and almonds, are even house-roasted and used to make fresh nut butters.

The most popular flavor to date at Spin Cafe is the Salted Caramel Chocolate Lace, with the Italian Chocolate Chip a close second, made with house-made chocolate sauce drizzled and folded into a classic gelato base. The Lemon Sorbet is a customer favorite all year long with varieties like Lemon Basil, and Lemon Lavender.

And, for those who don’t know, gelato is primarily made of milk and sugar with fresh ingredients added for flavoring like vanilla beans, chocolate, and nut butters. It is much denser then regular ice cream, with a velvety texture and intense flavor. While the Italian-style sorbetto at Spin Cafe is rich without the use of any fat or dairy, just fresh fruit, sugar, water and lemon juice. Choose from twelve gelato and sorbet flavors daily until sold out.

I’m not over it yet. The gelato gives me joy every time I make it. It’s like art, a craft. When it comes out of the machine and I pour it into the pan it makes me happy. Gelato never gets old. Eating gelato never gets old.
