Old Town Cellars, Blending Passions in the Mountains

The boys at Old Town Cellars have developed a unique business model, creating an urban winery in the middle of ski-town USA. This concept came to light with two local boys, Jason Morgan and Stephen MacKay, an après session, and a bottle of vintage Riesling. The two clinked glasses to close up a successful ski day, which then initiated the conversation of opening a wine bar in their hometown of Park City. This led to that and OTC was officially open for business.

OTC basically operates as a “negotiant” – a French term for a wholesaler who purchases grapes, bulk juice, or finished wine from other vineyards. Once the wine is in their hands, negotiants are then permitted to blend and bottle with their own private label. In OTC’s case, they focus mostly on juice from Washington, Oregon, and California.

Our two favorite wines at OTC are the Mountain Town White and Mountain Town Red.

The 2017 vintage Mountain Town White is a blend of 40% gruner veltliner, 40% riesling, and 20% viognier – all hailing from Oregon’s Umqua Valley.

This wine is aromatic, mineral-citrus fruit driven, with zippy acidity. A perfect winter white.

The 2013 vintage Mountain Town Red comes from Colombia Valley in Washington – 80% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot.

A medium bodied, earthy, sultry and smooth red. I like to call this one “the decision maker”.

Both wines are available at your local state stores.

Locals Serving Locals

In addition to blending fabulous wines, OTC puts a fair-minded focus on supporting their local comrades, a sort of reciprocal relationship that benefits all. Enjoy one of their six beautiful wines with a meat and cheese board from Beltex Meats, chocolate from Ritual, or cheese from Gold Creek Farms. And if wine isn’t necessarily your thing, you can choose to imbibe in some local libations from Red Rock Brewery, Beehive Distillery, Alpine Distillery, or 2 Row Brewing. You’ll feel good knowing that you’re giving your support to our many hard working local proprietors.
